Title: Ten

Author: Gretchen McNeil

Publisher: Balzer + Bray

Publication date: 09/18/2012

Format: Hardcover - 304 pages

Genre: YA - Thriller

Ten

It was supposed to be the weekend of their lives - three days on Henry Island at an exclusive house party. Best friends Meg and Minnie each have their own reasons for wanting to be there, which involve their school's most eligible bachelor, T.J. Fletcher, and look forward to three glorious days of boys, bonding, and fun-filled luxury.

But what they expect is definitely not what they get, and what starts out as fun turns dark and twisted after the discovery of a DVD with a sinister message: Vengeance is mine.

Suddenly, people are dying, and with a storm raging outside, the teens are cut off from the rest of the world. No electricity, no phones, no internet, and a ferry that isn't scheduled to return for three days. As the deaths become more violent and the teens turn on each other, can Meg find the killer before more people die? Or is the killer closer to her than she could ever imagine?

My thoughts:

I never expected this book to turn out the way it did. I expected it to be the usual thriller - that maybe I would end up guessing who the killer is before it's revealed. Or at least that I don't guess but it won't be that great of a read. That's what these books usually turn out to be like for me. I'm not really into thrillers. But, boy, was I wrong! I'm so glad I was too!

I started this book this in the morning straight after waking up. I finished it two hours after.

It was honestly one of the most suspenseful reads I have ever read and it's for that very reason that it has to go on my all time favourites list. Everything about it is just what a good read should be. I can't praise it enough.

The characters were so brilliantly written it takes my breath away. After finishing the book I realised that if they weren't - if a single character seemed out of place because of the tiniest detail - this book would not have worked in the slightest. I can only imagine how much thought went into each and every single person and it really did show by the end of the book. Every one of them had a place to be every moment of the book and a unique personality trait that made me second guess them all the time. It was set up perfectly.

Plot wise, you can't really get more intense. Everything was leading up to what happens in the end, making me want to get there that little bit faster. Everything seemed to build up on top of all the characters shoulders as soon as anything happened and I could read it in how the characters acted and eventually started to turn on each other.

Gretchen McNeil is a brilliant writer if this book is anything to go by. She kept up the suspense the whole way through - before anything even happened there was an atmosphere there that had me constantly on edge. That, as well as the characters and plot, made this to be a really fantastic read.

My rating:  10/10

This week the question is:

What writing device or trick most irritates you when reading a book? For example, if an author employs an omnipotent narrator that is sometimes considered bad form.

What most irritates me is definitely the whole soulmate aspect you can find in a lot of books nowadays. I understand if two characters meet each other and experience great chemistry or attraction but to come out the next day and declare your love and that you want to spend the rest of your life with them? It doesn't happen in real life so I would prefer not to read it in books. I prefer characters in relationships to have problems just like the rest of us...

Review: Clockwork Angel

Title: Clockwork Angel

Author: Cassandra Clare

Series: The Infernal Devices #1

Publisher: UK - Walker Books | US - Margaret K. McElderry

Publication date: UK - 03 Mar 2011 | US - October 2011

Format:  Paperback - 496 pages

Genre: YA - Fantasy

Clockwork Angel (The Infernal Devices, #1)

When sixteen-year-old Tessa Gray arrives in England during the reign of Queen Victoria, something terrifying is waiting for her in London's Downworld, where vampires, warlocks and other supernatural folk stalk the gaslit streets. Friendless and hunted, Tessa seeks refuge with the Shadowhunters, a band of warriors dedicated to ridding the world of demons. Drawn ever deeper into their world, she finds herself fascinated by - and torn between - two best friends and quickly realises that love may be the most dangerous magic of all.

My thoughts:

I'm really beginning to think I'll love anything by Cassandra Clare and for good reason - she's such a fantastic writer.

Clockwork Angel was really no exception - just as I loved the Mortal Instrument series I love this one so far. It immediately captured my full attention from the first line and I fell instantly in love with the book in general, never mind the characters and story line.

The characters of Clockwork Angel were quite different to those of the Mortal Instruments series and yet pretty similar at the same time. They all had completely different personalities, especially Henry, he was amazing - he constantly made me laugh every time he appeared and was so endearing. Will of course has to be my favourite character with his bad boy attitude - I also loved Jem though. He was really refreshing to read with his all his charm and because of how amazingly sweet he was throughout the whole read.

The plot had me on edge the whole time. It wasn't at all like the Mortal Instruments in that respect - Clockwork Angel had a level of intensity I've never read before: it was really dark in places and coupled with the settings, it made for an enthralling read. I loved it!

As for the writing, it was faultless. I haven't read anything by any other author that allows me to imagine everything going on in such detail. I know quite a few people dislike incredibly descriptive writing because it seems to drag everything out a little but I don't think it is when it's just so well done. It's literally like watching a great film in your head and reading whilst doing so - great combination in my opinion.

At the risk of sounding redundant, I seriously can't recommend this book enough. It has everything a good read should have and then some. Please, please, please pick it up.

My rating:  10/10

Title: Starling

Starling (Starling, #1)

Mason Starling is a champion fencer on the Gosforth Academy team, but she's never had to fight for her life. Not until the night a ferocious, otherworldly storm rips through Manhattan, trapping Mason and her teammates inside the school. Mason is besieged by nightmarish creatures more terrifying than the thunder and lightning as the raging tempest also brings a dangerous stranger into her life: a young man who remembers nothing but his name - the Fennrys Wolf. His arrival tears Mason's world apart, even as she feels an undeniable connection to him. Together, they seek to unravel the secrets of Fenn's identity as strange and supernatural forces gather around them. When they discover Mason's family - with its dark allegiance to ancient Norse gods - is at the heart of the mystery, Fennrys and Mason are suddenly faced with a terrifying future.

My thoughts:

This book has to be all that is considered unputdownable. It was without a doubt a definite page turner - I loved it.

It was the first book I've read by Livingston. I'd already heard great things about her books and writing so I was excited to try it out for myself. I wasn't disappointed - not by a long shot. I found her writing to be fantastically thrilling, wonderfully intense, suspenseful and magical. I loved how she's included just enough mythology to keep me intrigued and kept enough of it hidden so I immediately want to pick up another book that she wrote.

The characters in Starling were brilliant. I took a shine to them immediately, especially Mason and Fenn. Mason was really exciting to read about with all the aspects of her personality - she has great skills in fencing, really bad claustrophobia and was just really loveable in all ways. Fenn was just as loveable to me. He was a great character from how he entered the story to how he interacted with Mason - it was really sweet. I would have loved to have learnt about all his lost memories in a bit more detail but saying that, there are a bucket load of questions I have which I really can't wait to have answered.

Starling's plot was astounding in my opinion. I did say I thought the book was a definite page turner and it was for this reason. I loved the whole mythology aspect to it as well as the fact that it wasn't predictable to me at all which is something that I hate to a big extent in any read. There wasn't any part of the book where I wanted to put it down or leave it for one second. Even where there wasn't any action there was always the anticipation of it which is just as good. I did think the ending seemed a bit rushed to me but how it ended more than made up for it to be honest.

I definitely have to pick up something else by Livingston soon because if any of her other books are as good as this one, then I want them in my hands as soon as possible.

My rating: 9/10

Review: Ward Against Death

11796405

Title: Ward Against Death

Author: Melanie Card

Publisher: Entangled Publishing

Publication date: August 2nd, 2011

Format: ebook - 286 pages

Genre: Fantasy

Ward de’Ath expected this to be a simple job—bring a nobleman’s daughter back from the dead for fifteen minutes, let her family say good-bye, and launch his fledgling career as a necromancer. Goddess knows he can’t be a surgeon—the Quayestri already branded him a criminal for trying—so bringing people back from the dead it is.

But when Ward wakes the beautiful Celia Carlyle, he gets more than he bargained for. Insistent that she’s been murdered, Celia begs Ward to keep her alive and help her find justice. By the time she drags him out her bedroom window and into the sewers, Ward can’t bring himself to break his damned physician’s Oath and desert her.

However, nothing is as it seems—including Celia. One second, she’s treating Ward like sewage, the next she’s kissing him. And for a nobleman’s daughter, she sure has a lot of enemies. If he could just convince his heart to give up on the infuriating beauty, he might get out of this alive…

My thoughts:

This one definitely surprised me from the get go.

From the very first page I was certainly thrown into the deep end with all of the action. Admittedly it was a little confusing at first but I did get the hand of it after a few pages. I really enjoyed how fast paced it was - I've never read anything that was as fast-paced and intense as this read.

I'm going to get it over with and talk about all the things I didn't like about the read. I thought, because of how fast the read was paced, that I wasn't introduced to the characters as well as I could have been. It was like they were just there and then it was bang, straight into the action. I didn't know a thing about the character's personalities or even all of their names barely. I think it's because of this that I didn't really like any of the characters. I know Ward is supposed to be sweet and the kind of man always trying to do the right thing but to me, he came across as a right idiot. I'm sorry, but he was ridiculously stupid in my eyes, not just in the decisions he made but how he talked to everybody.

I did love the plot of the book. It was a surprise from the very start. A girl is raised from the dead and immediately wants to solve her own murder. It was great. There were necromancers, assassins and a woman who can suck the soul out of you with kiss. There were brilliant action sequences.

I do have mixed feelings about this book though since I didn't get on well with the characters. I think it's a great read for anybody who enjoys a lot of action in their books but for me I think it was an average read.

My rating: 6/10

Review: Debutantes

13449242

Title: Debutantes

Author: Cora Harrison

Publisher: panmacmillan

Publication date: 02/08/2012

Format: Paperback - 320 pages

Genre: YA | Historical

It's 1923 and London is a whirl of jazz, dancing and parties.

Violet, Daisy, Poppy and Rose Derrington are desperate to be part of it, but stuck in an enormous crumbling house in the country, with no money and no fashionable dresses, the excitement seems a lifetime away.

Luckily, the girls each have a plan for escaping their humdrum country life: Rose wants to be a novelist, Poppy a jazz musician and Daisy a famous film director. Violet, however, has only one ambition: to become the perfect Debutante, so that she can go to London and catch the eye of Prince George, the most eligible bachelor in the country.

But a house as big and old as Beech Grove Manor hides many secrets, and Daisy is about to uncover one so huge it could ruin all their plans - ruin everything - forever.

My thoughts:

This book was actually the first young adult historical fiction I've ever read. Even if it wasn't the best book I've ever read I wasn't disappointed and definitely want to read more of the historical genre - it was like Downton Abbey in a book (I love Downton Abbey).

The characters in this read was definitely the best thing about it in my opinion. I loved how unique all the sisters are in their own respect. Poppy with her jazz and outspoken personality was my favourite along with Daisy. Daisy had a little bit of an opposite personality to Poppy. She seemed to think about things a lot more and ways around them where Poppy would just dive head first and not care where she came up.

Rose, of course, was a sweetheart which I think is what her role was in the book. As the younger sister she was just there for support and to tag along whilst trying to achieve her own dream - to become a novelist. I loved how she would constantly come out with headlines or chapter titles with every single thing that happens to any of the sisters in the book. She was a refreshing character and I looked forward to her popping up in the story.Violet, however, was a little too self-centred for my liking. She had her moments but for the most part I didn't really like her considering the other sisters did their best to help her out, especially Daisy, she was seriously under appreciated.

I thought that it took a while for me to actually get into the story. It started off really slow but started to pick up towards the middle. My biggest problem though was the ending. I wasn't as satisfied as you should be when you finish a book. The ending felt rushed for a start and it didn't seem resolved enough.  I would have liked each sister to have had something exciting happen to them not just one or two.

Cora Harrison's writing is lovely though. Debutantes has such gorgeous description of the houses, dresses and characters which I really adored.

All in all I found this to be an average read but I did enjoy the writing and reading about the characters.

My rating:7/10

Title: Blackwood
Author: Gwenda Bond
Publisher: Strange Chemistry
Publication date: UK - 6th September 2012 | US - 4th September 2012
Format: Paperback - 352 pages
Genre: YA - Paranormal

On Roanoke Island, the legend of the 114 people who mysteriously vanished from the Lost Colony hundreds of years ago is just a story for the tourists. But when the island faces the sudden disappearance of 114 people right now, an unlikely pair of 17 year-olds maybe the only hope of bringing them back.

Miranda, a misfit girl from the island's most infamous family, and Phillips, an exiled teen criminal who hears the voices of the dead, must dodge everyone from federal agents to long-dead alchemists as they work to uncover the secrets of the new Lost Colony. The one thing they can't dodge is each other.

My thoughts:

For me this was one of those reads that were clearly divided with each half of the book. I didn't enjoy the last half as much as I did the first.

From the first page I started to really enjoy the writing style of Bond. The story started off with this really creepy feel to it and it carried on that way for a good while - it was such a great read. The island has this amazing description and the characters are introduced, both of them seeming to be great. The first of the evil happenings were really intense and captivating. I desperately wanted to know what was going on and getting seriously excited to find out at the end.

The characters were also really great to start off with. Miranda has a little fight to her and questions everything whereas Phillips is a little bit of a bad boy with a self-made reputation. During the second half of the book I started to get really tired of them though. Thinking back I felt that they weren't developing and changing in the little ways characters are supposed to. I can't read three hundred pages of characters who remain the same throughout.

The second half of the book was disappointing simply because it was incredibly underwhelming. I was so excited for the explanations to be revealed and when they were I was really unenthusiastic. It became a lot of effort to pick this book back up towards the end so I ended up dragging it out even longer.

I did enjoy the first half so this book does have it's really good moments but the ending just kind of throws it all away.

My rating: 5/10

What book do you think would make a great Halloween movie? Please explain in graphic detail of goriness...

I have to say anything by Darren Shan. Particularly the Demonata series. There's so much gore in those books and the story is so great too! All the demons ripping people apart would be a great Halloween scare.

Publication date: UK - 08 May 2012| US - May 2012

Format: Paperback - 560  pages

Genre: YA - Urban Fantasy

Jace is now a servant of evil, bound for all eternity to Sebastian. Only a small band of Shadowhunters believe he can be saved. To do this they must defy the Clave. And they must act without Clary. For Clary is playing a dangerous game utterly alone. The price of losing is not just her own life, but Jace's soul. Clary is willing to do anything for Jace, but can she still trust him? Or is he truly lost? What price is too high to pay, even for love?

My thoughts:

You should know that this review is probably going to be all over the place with how amazing this book is. Especially since I have come to realise I have to wait such a long time for the next one to come out.

City of Lost Souls was definitely the most intense book out of the series so far in my opinion. It was so hard to put it down and I always felt I wasn't turning the page fast enough. It was full to the brim with so much suspense that every time something happened my heart would race that little bit more. It was just all round a really exciting book and I haven't experienced a read like that in a really long time.

There was more of every character in this one and each one had a little part to play in the plot. They have definitely got to be my favourite set of characters from any books I've read. Each one is really well-rounded and developed - they each have their own story and unique personality. There isn't one that I hate for being an awful character because they're all so brilliantly written.

I also really appreciate how great of a writer Cassandra Clare is. She has such a great level of description in all of the books that really made me feel like this world exists. I can imagine every magical place and cities in my mind as I read which is what a book should be able to do.

The plot was just nail biting to me. It focuses more on Jace with his family and friends trying to save his soul. Because I loved Jace so much from the first four books in the series I seriously found the plot really enthralling with all of its suspense and intensity. There really isn't anything bad to say about it.

All in all I absolutely adore this book and I'm probably going to read it another 10 times before the next one comes out. Plus, have you seen this cover? It's so gorgeous!

This week the question is:

What do you hope to accomplish with your blog? Is it to one day become an author yourself, just for fun, maybe get some online attention, or maybe something very different?

This is an easy one for me. I definitely do not blog to become an author, I hate writing it drives me crazy which is all the more reason to appreciate the amazing authors that are out there.

I love blogging mostly because it gives me a voice. It is really fun to do most of the time since I get to do what I love and share it with as many people as possible.

I've mentioned this before but my friends hate everything to do with books. Just today I suggested we go into Waterstones when I was in the city centre and everybody literally groaned simultaneously - le sigh.

All I want to accomplish whilst blogging is just to try and spread the word to as many people about the great books that are out there. I love the feeling when someone comments saying they picked up a book based on my recommendation and loved it. It makes me feel great since I can't do that with my close friends - well I could but they won't read a page of it...

Don't forget to check out my latest series spotlight! I'm reviewing The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare which was absolutely amazing:

Clary is back in New York and life is good: she's training to be a Shadowhunter and is finally able to call Jace her boyfriend. But nothing comes without a price. When Jace inexplicably begins to pull away from her, Clary is forced to acknowledge that she herself has set in motion a chain of events that could lead to the loss of everything she loves. Even Jace.

Love. Blood. Betrayal. Revenge.

The stakes are higher than ever...

My thoughts:

What could I possibly say that will even begin to explain how good these books are? Every time I finish a book by Cassandra Clare nowadays I just sit there afterwards thinking about it for like an hour. That's how I know I enjoyed it - they make me resent having to start another book because I want to stay engrossed in the world of Shadowhunters for just a moment longer.

City of Fallen Angels was a little bit different to the first three books in a couple of ways. There was a lot more of Simon and a little bit less of Clary. It was just enough of a switch though because it wasn't too much or too little of either of them which I really enjoyed because both are great characters. Another difference I noticed was that the book was separated into two parts in my opinion. The first half of the book seemed to be focused mostly on the characters and how they had changed and what problems they were facing with just everyday life. It was more about Clary and Jace's relationship, Simon's love life and maybe a little of Clary's mother Jocelyn and her relationship with Luke.

The second half, however, was just action packed moment after moment which was way more intense than anything in the first three books. I thought there was a tremendous amount of build up from the start of the book but I had no idea what it was leading to. It made it so much better in my opinion and it also stood out from the rest of the series which is always great.

The plot was great. It did seem like an in-between kind of book but it still had a lot of substance on its own. I honestly can't wait to find out what happens - it ends on such a huge cliffhanger that it's driving me crazy not knowing.

All in all the book was fantastic and I really, really love Cassandra Clare.

My rating: 10/10

Teaser Tuesday #39

Tte

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

This week the teaser if from Debutantes by Cora Harrison.

His smile was friendly, but Daisy did not dare photograph him again. There was something rather commanding and forcible about him - an air of someone who was used to getting his own way.
